Located at 111 North Detroit Street in West Liberty, Liberty Gathering Place is much more than a restaurant—it is a place where neighbors gather, families share meals, and generations of West Liberty history come together around the table. The restaurant has deep roots in the community. The building has been home to a restaurant since the 1940s, beginning with The Betty Lane Restaurant and later becoming Dajolee’s. In 1995, Cindy Oelker purchased the business and became a beloved part of the West Liberty community, especially known for her homemade pies. In March 2023, Ashley Shaffer took ownership and began the next chapter of Liberty Gathering Place. Ashley has continued to honor the restaurant's history while bringing her own vision and energy to the business. A Place Where Everyone Feels Welcome Liberty Gathering Place has become a favorite destination for locals and visitors looking for a delicious, home-cooked meal and a welcoming atmosphere. Known for serving breakfast all day, the restaurant offers a menu filled with classic breakfast favorites as well as lunch and dinner options. Their monthly breakfast buffet has become a community favorite, and of course, no conversation about Liberty Gathering Place would be complete without mentioning their famous pies! The restaurant's pies have become a tradition of their own, continuing the legacy established by Cindy while giving Ashley and her team another way to bring people together. Investing in the Community One of the qualities that makes Liberty Gathering Place stand out is its commitment to the West Liberty community. Ashley and her team have consistently found ways to support local people, organizations, and causes. The restaurant has become a place where community members don't just come to eat—they come to connect. Continuing a Legacy Liberty Gathering Place represents something special about small-town businesses: continuity, tradition, and community. While the business continues to evolve, the heart of the restaurant remains the same—a welcoming place where people know they can enjoy a good meal and feel at home. Ashley and her team have embraced opportunities to expand the business, including catering and taking Liberty Gathering Place on the road with their food trailer. These efforts allow the restaurant's food and hospitality to reach even more people while continuing to grow the Liberty Gathering Place name beyond its North Detroit Street location.
